Charles Shumate Obituary

Charles E Shumate, of Potomac, IL passed peacefully, surrounded by his wife of 31 years, his daughter and son.

He was a homebirth in Potomac on August 11th 1948 to Delbert and Dorothy Spain Shumate. He was the third child of six. He attended Potomac schools and graduated in 1966. He was drafted into the United States Army serving 2 years. He had the best work ethic any human could ever have. He worked construction his whole life. He was always building and took great pride in being the Owner of Shumate Home Improvement.

He was a very honest and respected businessman. He was actually a jack of all trades as he was always in his garage or woodshed doing something; he could not sit idle. He had numerous hobbies. To mention a few:
•Woodworking - he had a shop that his daughter would joking tell him looked like Santa's workshop
•He liked to fish and hunt
•Enjoyed looking at his prize deer heads on his family room wall
•He really enjoyed building hot rod cars; he shared the love with his son. He would smile when his great-granddaughter McKinlee said she felt bad he had to build his own cars because he couldn't afford to go purchase a car. That would make him laugh every time we talked about it.
•He enjoyed family cookouts; he was down for it anytime. He enjoyed the spread of the food and seeing family and grandkids.

He was the type of guy you knew exactly where you stood with him; if he had something to say he said it. His kids didn't always agree with him but they always knew they could call him for advice or just to vent. He always picked up the phone. He was a very supportive husband and dad. He was affectionately known by his grandkids and great grands as Poppy.

His family will miss him endlessly; he was definitely the glue to them. He leaves behind his wife Sherry Reynolds Shumate of Potomac IL, daughter Tammy Pratt of Danville IL, son Jeremy (Cindy) Shumate of Oakwood IL, stepdaughter Tammy Mock of Kalamazoo MI, seven grandsons, four granddaughters, three great-grandsons and two great granddaughters. He was proceeded in death by his parents, two brothers, his granddaughter Savannah Lynn Bruns and he will be laid to rest next to his oldest daughter Robin Lynn Shumate. The family welcomes everyone to dress casual as he wasn't a dress up kinda guy. Join us at 11647 Kickapoo Park Rd Oakwood IL 61858 on Saturday April 20th 2024. Visitation will be 9:00am until 11:00am. Funeral to immediately follow. His children will officiate.
