Edith L. Hollen, 89, of Oakwood, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at 4:10 pm. Born on July 19, 1934, to Ralph B. and Elizabeth (Meyer) Lohr in Gabby Heights, Pennsylvania, Edith was the cherished third child, joining her older brothers Paul and Ralph Lohr. After a brief but memorable time in Long Beach, California, the family returned and settled in Washington, PA, where Edith graduated from Washington High School.
During an unexpected encounter while her brother Paul and Lloyd Johnson were on leave from the United States Army, Edith met Lloyd, whom she married on New Year's Eve in 1952. The young couple relocated to Bismarck, IL, where Edith devoted herself to raising their four children over the next 35 years.
Edith pursued her passion for nursing, attending Lakeview College of Nursing and serving as a dedicated nurse at Lakeview Hospital and later as a Charge Nurse at Danville Care Nursing Home. In retirement, she settled in Oakwood, IL, where she remained active in community organizations like TOPS and the Red Hats Society and continued her walk in faith as a member of Danville First Church of the Nazarene.
Known for her nurturing nature, Edith delighted in crocheting, reading daily devotions, and spending time with family. She was an avid animal lover and spent many hours sitting on her front porch watching and feeding the birds and squirrels. She will be fondly remembered for her kindness and willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Edith is survived by her four children: Lloyd (Carol) Johnson of Eustis, FL; Star (Brad) Andrews of Danville, IL; Randy (Sue) Johnson of Fithian, IL; and Rebecca Audo (Jeff Calvert) of Oakwood, IL. She leaves behind twelve grandchildren: Mike (Neha), Troy (Julie), Joel and Clint (Michelle) Johnson, Shawna (Paul) Slavich, Ryan (Jena), Brett (Sara) and Brandon (Kimberly) Taflinger; Jenna (Chris) Everingham, Kayla Johnson, Austin and Ashley Audo and 21 great-grandchildren. Also survived by cherished individuals Larry Lytle; who was like a son to her, Jennifer Studholme; her home-care giver and Joyce Gardner, dear neighbor and friend.
Preceding her in death are her parents, two brothers, spouses Lloyd Johnson and Jack Hollen, her dear friend Mary Campbell, and son-in-law David Audo.
A celebration of Edith's life will take place on March 28, 2024, at Danville First Church of the Nazarene, 2212 N. Vermilion Street in Danville, IL.
