Charlotte Mayer Downing died peacefully on July 26 at the Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois. Born on July 17, 1950 in Crawfordsville, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Michael Mayer III and Evelyn Louise McConaughy. Charlotte grew up in Covington, Indiana, graduated from Covington High School in 1968, and worked at the Covington Senior Center for many years while she raised her family.
Charlotte lived a life full of compassion and empathy that she passed down to those lucky enough to have known her. She adored nature and could often be found taking care of her plants, working in the garden, or playing with her pets. Even as she struggled with personal difficulties, she gave a lot of herself to those around her at work at the senior center. After a divorce, she attended Danville Area Community College where she met her second husband David because she needed a computer tutor. She taught him more about life than he taught her about computers. They relocated to Kankakee and lived there for many happy years before moving back to the Danville area. Charlotte brought sunshine into David’s life and the lives of her family and friends. She will be greatly missed.
Charlotte is survived by her husband David Downing of Rossville, Illinois, her three sons Mickey Morton, Jason Morton, and Greg Morton (with wife Wendy), her sister, Lynda Graham, a niece Becky Johnson, a grandniece Cassie Nelson, a great-grandnephew, Seth Eric Mayes, Mickey’s children Paisley and Blaise Morton, Jason’s son Leviticus Morton, and a first cousin Virginia Kerr. She was predeceased by her first husband Jimmy Morton.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Online condolences: www.rortvedtfuneralservices.com
