Dennis Michael Askins

Dennis Michael Askins 80, of Danville passed away at 7:45p March 28 surrounded by loved ones.

Dennis was born June 12, 1944 in Danville, Il the son of Leonard and Helen (Bolser) Askins. He married the love of his life Maureen O’Shaughnessy December 24, 1964 at All Souls Church in Peterborough England. She survives.

In addition to Maureen, survivors include his children, Marguerite (Stephen) O’Shaughnessy of Tipperary, Ireland, Michael (Sylvie) Askins of Milton, MA, Tyke (Renee Mroz) Askins of Danville, Shawn (Amy) Askins of Danville, 4 grandchildren in Ireland, Mark (Karen) O’Brien, Denis (Maria) O’Brien, Gemma (Gary Murray) O’Brien, Mikie (Aoife McCormack) O’Brien, 4 grandchildren in IL, Joshua (Ashlee) Fulton, Katey (Evan) Ingram, Nicholas Askins, Sarah Askins, 1 grandchild in New Jersey, Morgan (Chris) Langone, 1 grandchild in MA, Chloe Askins, 12 sweet great grandchildren, sister, Marilyn (Rick) Hix, brother, Bub Askins, and many beloved nieces and nephews who adoringly called him Uncle Butch.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Helen, brother, Jocko Askins, and sisters, Linda, Darlene, Karen, and Carmen.

Dennis, a dedicated and honorable man, passed away leaving behind a legacy of service, love, and cherished memories. He proudly served in the United States Air Force for 8 years, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. As a Vietnam Veteran, Dennis continued his commitment to his fellow servicemen by volunteering at the VA in Danville, where his contributions were deeply appreciated.

Following his military service, Dennis embarked on a long and fruitful career with Hyster Company, where he worked diligently for 37 years before retiring in 2006. His dedication to his profession was matched by his passion for the outdoors and sports.

Dennis found great joy in fishing with his good friends Richard and Kenny, and in hunting trips with his friend Jim. He was an avid sports fan, with a particular affection for the Chicago Cubs, proudly celebrating their 2016 World Series Championship. His love for sports extended to coaching little league, where he inspired many young athletes.

He also enjoyed the tranquility of camping and the breathtaking views overlooking the Glen of Aherlow in Tipperary, a place that held a special place in his heart. Above all, Dennis treasured the time spent with his family, creating lasting memories filled with love and laughter.

Dennis will be fondly remembered as a thoughtful husband, a compassionate friend, and a selfless, loving father who gave everything to the family he adored. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and love will continue to inspire all who knew him.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11a.m. on Thursday, April 10, 2025 at St. Paul Catholic Church 1303 N. Walnut St Danville, Il 61832. Father John Cyr will officiate.

Visitation will be held from 9a.m to 11a.m. Thursday, April 10 at the church.

Burial will be at the Danville National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Thursday with Military Rites accorded by American Legion Post 210 Honor Guard.
