Edwin Rae Barton

Edwin Rae Barton Sr. passed away at 9:29am Sunday, December 29th at OSF in Danville, Illinois.  Edwin was born on April 8th, 1938, in Georgetown Illinois to Charles and Garnet (Dickson) Barton Sr.  Edwin married the love of his life his high school sweetheart Judith A Smith on January 4th, 1958, and celebrated an adventurous 66 years together. 

Survivors include his wife Judy, his 2 sons  Edwin R (Candy) Barton Jr of Westville and Timothy (Ronda) Barton of Perrysville Indiana, a special sister in law Debbie Rivers, his grandchildren Linda (Jonathon) Freiman,  Amber (Aaron) Kennedy, Lucas (Erin) Barton and TJ (Drew) Barton his great grandchildren Layla Atwood, Owen Atwood, Opal Freiman, Landon Freiman, Lily Freiman, Clay Barton, Chloe Barton, Collin Kennedy, Weston Kennedy Blakely Dixon, a grandnephew Alan (Jodie) Rivers and many nieces and nephews.

Edwin was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers Charles Barton Jr, Jim Barton and Joe Barton, 2 sisters Hope Hathaway and Shirley Galyen.

In their younger days, Ed and Judy fostered several children and always had their door open to anyone in the Westville community.

Ed also served the community as a board member of the Westville School District and coached his sons in youth baseball.  There was one game in which he felt his team was not being treated fairly by the opposite team and umpires, so he pulled the team off the field and said let's go home boys we don't play with cheaters and the whole team walked off.

Edwin began working at Davies Meat Packing plan right out of high school and then worked for 39 years at Bunge (Lauhoff) before retiring.

Ed enjoyed all types of sports including hunting with his sons and bowling in several men's and mixed leagues.

Ed and Judy spent many years with their family fishing and camping at their cabin on the Wabash.

Ed and Judy could often be seen at their great grandchildren’s sporting events in addition they loved country music and would attend many dances around the area where they made several new friends.

Somewhere along the way Ed picked up the nickname "GRUMP" and relished sharing his grumpiness with all he came in contact with.

All the cashiers in many stores would call out here's GRUMP when he came in. Whenever he went out for dinner the waitress would ask what he would like to eat and he'd always answer I'd rather eat at Judy's kitchen or he would ask if they had hog jowls and hominy grits.

When anyone came to visit, he would send them off with a comeback when you can stay longer farewell.

Ed "GRUMP" will be sadly missed by many friends and family including his beloved dog Brownie and several feral cats he fed.

The family would like to thank the many nurses and doctors at OSF and Carle and a special shout out to his buddies Amanbir Bhinder and Abhishek Badsar at the Phillips 66 gas station in Westville who joked with him about his many trips there for lotto tickets and always took time to pump gas for him in his truck.

Per his wishes, Edwin will be cremated. The family will host a memorial celebration sometime in the future.
