James Rouse Obituary

James A. Rouse, 95, of Tilton, passed away Jan. 24, 2015, at Presence United Samaritans Medical Center. He had lived with leukemia and osteoporosis for several years.

Born Aug. 15, 1919, James was a son of the late W.F and Sarah Wainwright Rouse. One of seven children, he was preceded in death by siblings, Daisy and Earl Rouse, Marguerite Monroe, Clara Thompson, and Alice May. One sister, Sara Tucker, of Danville, survives.

After graduating from Oakwood schools, James entered the work force, taking positions locally and in Chicago. In 1944, he began working with GM, Tilton, primarily in the company’s Chem Lab. He retired from GM in 1979.

On Aug. 9, 1942, James married Mildred Gilliland in Catlin. They celebrated 60 years of marriage before her death in October 2002. James and Mildred had two sons, Richard of Chicago and Ronald of New York State, both of whom survive.

Also surviving are two grandchildren, Caitlin of New York and Tyler (Sharon Suh) of Florida. Two nieces and nine nephews survive as well.

James, in his younger days, had volunteered in a number of community organizations. During later years, he helped support and educate individuals and professionals affected by dementia. His most active volunteer work centered around his church, Central Park Church of Christ, where he had served in a number of capacities during over 50 years of membership.

Central Park Church of Christ will serve as the setting for James’s memorial service Saturday, Feb. 28, beginning at 11 a.m. Pastors Michael Luke and Wade Martin will officiate. A luncheon will conclude the celebration.
