John Myrd Hershberger

John Myrd Hershberger, 69, of Danville, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at St. Vincent Regional Hospital in Anderson, Indiana.

He was the son of Floyd D. and Rosemarie (Walker) Hershberger.

John married Helen (Smart) Neild in Danville, Illinois on September 20, 1997.  She Survives.

He attended Danville area schools and Danville Area Community College.  After high school he joined the Air Force from 1972 to 1976.  Last duty was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base C Canine Corp doing Presidential Protection for President Ford.  John’s proudest service to our country was helping severely injured POW’s returning from Vietnam. 

John worked for Illinois Healthcare System and retired after 38 years of service.

He was a lifetime member of the NRA, Amateur Radio, Kickapoo Volunteer Fire Department, Danville Police Auxiliary.  He was an avid hunter, fisherman and an all-around outdoorsman.  He enjoyed his interests in military armor, law enforcement and an avid historian.

John is survived by a stepson; Benjamin (Jami Norman) Neild, stepdaughter; Brenda (Randall) Robinson, five step grandchildren; Piper Jones, Rory Robinson, Elijah Norman-Neild, Charles Norman-Neild and Gabe Norman-Neild. Brothers; Edward Hershberger, Thomas (Shelley) Hershberger, Sisters; Karen (Rick) Gardner, Jenifer (Earl) Lewis, Sister-in-law; Lynn (Richard) Bean and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins that were all loved by John.

John is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents Myrd and Maude (Darnell) Hershberger and Charles and Louise (Prendergast) Walker and a sister-in-law Sally Hershberger.

Services will be held at Georgetown United Methodist Church, 400 N. Main Street, Georgetown, Illinois at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, October 20, 2022. Visitation is one hour prior. Burial to follow at Danville National Cemetery, Danville, Illinois. Pastor Matthew Filiscsky is officiating. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 210.
