Marion Eugene Wright

Marion Eugene Wright, born January 15, 1941, in Danville, Illinois passed away peacefully on January 29, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of friendship and community. 

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Marion Alonso Wright and Margaret (Davis) Wright; brother, Frederick Wright; and sister, Jane Bireline. 

He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Darlene Wright; two sons, Brad and Darren Wright; five grandchildren, Josie, Davis, Maddie, Samuel, and Cal; and his favorite younger brother, Dennis Wright. 

Gene, as he was affectionally known, was a proud Danville native. He graduated from Danville High School, where he excelled as a four-sport letterman and served as quarterback of the football team. After accepting a football scholarship to the University of Illinois, he finished his undergraduate degree at Eastern Illinois University and received his law degree from Tulane University in New Orleans where he was Student Body President. 

After completing his studies, Gene returned to his hometown of Danville, where he practiced law for many years. He was well respected by the judiciary and the legal bar for his integrity and tenacious representation of his client. Gene's clients were often his friends, and his friends were his clients. 

Gene and his Uncle Bob Wright developed some of the iconic Danville properties including the Chateau Estates Residential Community on the shores of Lake Vermilion, and the original Sheraton Hotel on the coroner of Gilbert and Main Street. His law office, the historic Lamon House, was dedicated to the city and was moved to Lincoln Park where it is now a museum. 

In retirement, Gene could frequently be found at local establishment, holding court with friends and newcomers alike, sharing stories, opinions, and laughter that turned acquaintances into lifelong friends. An avid golfer, he served as a marshal at Harrison Park Golf Course greeting those waiting their turn to tee off. Gene's other favorite pastimes were working in his yard, maintaining it with meticulous care and attention to detail. 

Gene's warmth, wit, and unwavering sense of fairness touched countless lives in Danville, Vermilion County and beyond. He will be remembered not only for his accomplishments but for the humor and kindness he brought to every conversation and every friendship. His family and friends take comfort in knowing that his stories and spirit live on in all who knew him.
