Nancy Jeanne (Nelson) Bowden, 71, passed away at her home on January 8, 2020.
She was born in Danville IL, September 6, 1948, to Charles and Doris Nelson, who preceded her in death. She is survived by a sister, Charlene, of Oakwood IL, and a daughter, Kerry, of Oxford GA.
Nancy grew up near Oakwood and lived in the Carbondale IL area for nearly forty years, attending SIUC and working for the Foundation, School of Medicine, and the Associate Vice Chancellor and Provost for Academic Affairs.
In the 1990s, Nancy was a legal advocate for the Carbondale Women's Center, becoming the first crime victim advocate for the Carbondale Police Department. She was also an advocate for clients of the Chicago Council for Jewish Elderly and the Metro East Women's Crisis Center.
She had many interests and hobbies, including crocheting and jewelry making. She was also an avid reader and trivia buff.
Nancy will be missed by her family, friends, and neighbors. Her family gratefully acknowledges the community of Bowman Estates for their kindness and support.
A private memorial will be held at a later date. Rortvedt Funeral Services & Crematory of Tilton IL are handling arrangements and contributions in Nancy's memory.
